If you have a laptop with
Charts of the
World - CM-93 installed
and you buy a little GPS puck receiver off Ebay for around £30 it will
also do the navigation for you. Display your position on the chart
in real-time, display your actual Lat & Long, speed over the ground etc
etc etc.

You can sit at home, with the system installed on your
laptop, plan your routes and stopping places. If you put your cruising
speed, draft etc into its data bank the display will warn you of running
aground or simply tell you how many hours it will take to get from
waypoint to waypoint or the entire proposed voyage.
Take
the laptop to your boat, plug in the GPS puck and you can navigate along
the pre-planned route with your position displayed on the chart plus Lat
and Long on the side panel...
I came from Australia back to Europe via the Red Sea,
using a similar system. It allows you to print out charts, so you
are not 100% reliant on electronics which you should never be.

Courtesy of the American Freedom of Information Act it
also contains all the NOAA sailing directions for the Mediterranean
area.
If you are heading out to the Pacific it has the 12
months of Pacific Ocean Pilot Charts. There are numerous other USA
government pilotage and navigation publications included in a bundle

Sailing DVD's

The entire series of Blue Water DVDs were shot by a
professional film and television director during a circumnavigation. They
illustrate the experiences of a world cruising yacht crew - the places they
visit - the countries and most importantly give a feel for the life style.
Many
of the places are only visited by cruising yachts - sometimes impossible to get
to in any other way -
The Blue Water Destinations part one DVD is shot on board a yacht transiting the canal system
and is the only professional film, shot from the point of view of a yacht using
this facility in existence! It really does show exactly what is involved and will greatly
help those planning to use this huge commercial stretch of water, joining the
Caribbean with the Pacific Ocean.
It
is almost impossible to visit many of the Pacific Islands except by yacht so
much of these DVD's contain images and information impossible to source else
where. Even the Australian episode has material many Australian sailors have
never seen including a live helicopter rescue in a big blow with yachts on the
reef and the crews in serious trouble.
The
Asia DVD has visits to islands that seldom see strangers and dug out canoes are
the local method of transport. The entire series was shot by a sailor for
sailors or those planning to experience the great adventure.
