Twin drives for a snow goose elite
Our snow goose elite has a yanmar 30 driving through a sonic leg. We find the boat difficult to manage in marinas and a little underpowered at sea. Does anyone have experience of fitting twin engines or twin hydraulic drives with a single engine?
Re: Twin drives for a snow goose elite
Hi,
We have an Elite an experienced a similar problem. The single 30hp diesel & Sonic leg has been replaced by 2 X 27hp 3 cylinder Yanmar saildrives. I have feathering props fitted which, although expensive, do reduce drag when sailing. The other advantage is manouerability, the props are as efficient in reverse as they are going forward. This gives you so much control in tight spots, I think it is better then having a bow thruster.
The engines were supplied & fitted by French Marine & cost was about £15k. We have never regretted this spend & would recommend both the engines & French Marine. In retrospect I think 2 X 27hp engines was a bit OTT but the alternative at the time was 20hp 2 cylinder Volvos. I am sure they would have done the job but I opted for 3 cylinders as probably being less noisy.
Our engines were fitted about 8 years ago, there may be more choice now.
Best wishes
Ian
