split bulkheads

My main cabin bulkhead and the forward bulkhead also, both have a 1/4 gap between the port and starboard sides where they meet(allmost) in the center of the boat. They both have wooden plates making them fast with glue and screws. So on the one hand I guess that the gap is to allow for some play but on the other hand the screwed and glued wooden joiners make me think that no play is wanted !
I am about to complete a repair to the cabin bulkheads whereby the two would be well and truely made one at the floor level.....leaving not much room for play
in heavy seas etc. I'd appreceate any feedback on the subject.
Eden.
