prout snowgoose elite 37 route to the med

Hi i am barry and a new member,me and my partner kimberlee are looking at leaving the uk at the begining of april and crossing the channel in our newly purchased prout snowgoose.
We intend on spending the summer on our boat in the med. As i am a day sailor who has only sailed around the solent i feel we are not ready to tackle the bay of biscay. Therefore i would like to go through the french canals, reading on line many prouts have taken this route, my question is did they all use the canal du midi or will we fit on the following route calais to canal du nord,seine,loire then the rhone.
My main question is we are 4.95m wide and locks at loire state they are 5m is this the maximum size of boat or the actual lock size this seems really tight.any advise would be much appreciated and save me many sleepless nights.
Also any advise for first timers going to the med would help a lot ,
